“The year was 1967. The summer of love. The summer JanSport was born in the back of a Seattle transmission shop.” That, according to a blog for outdoor enthusiasts published by JanSport, is the unlikely way one of the world’s leading makers of backpacks and related gear got its start.
With the tag line “Discover Freedom,” JanSport has leveraged the brand’s personality, turning it into something of a cult with about 235,000 fans on Facebook.
“really impressed with this backpack….everything I’ve come to expect from Jansport. I couldn’t be happier.”
“strong and has lots of good compartments including the laptop sleeve”
“the handles are cushioned very nicely”
“had this for over 4 years and used on an almost daily basis and yet it’s still going relatively strong. Pretty impressive!”

“the straps are very comfortable”
“one of the bast things is the padded compartment for my laptop”
“seriously surpassed all expectations by a LONG way”

Buyers thought this was a good-looking and reasonably sized bag but the lack of internal pockets meant organisation was poor.
There were concerns too about the lack of padding in the base and also in the laptop pocket.
There would be little protection for a laptop in the event of being dropped and you can feel it pushing into your back.
JanSport wasn’t a company so much as a proposal that Murray Pletz made to his girlfriend Jan Lewis: If she could sew up a prototype of a new kind of backpack using an aluminum frame he invented, Murray would marry her and name the company after her. Jan accepted both the business and marriage proposal, and JanSport was born. Murray’s cousin, Skip Yowell, finagled the backpack into a local store and the rest, as they say, is history.
Over 40 years later, the company continues to prosper. JanSport is now owned by VF Corporation, a fashion conglomerate with a brand portfolio that includes Eagle Creek, Lee, Nautica, The North Face, Reef, and Wrangler. Still, JanSport has managed to retain the feel of “the Original Outdoor Gear Brand,” as it calls itself.
