Ryanair hand luggage size

ryanair hand luggage size

The most popular airlines in Europe, Ryanair and easyJet both charge for checking a bag into the hold. So many travellers try to fit everything in their carry-on case. To get the most out of your hand baggage, you’ll need to know how much you are allowed to take with you in the Ryanair hand luggage size.

Ryanair not so stingy now

worlds-lightest-suitcaseRyanair’s historically stingy cabin baggage policy was relaxed last year.

Passengers are allowed to carry “one cabin bag per passenger (excluding infants travelling on a parent’s lap) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm”. These restrictions are stricter than many other airlines, including easyJet and British Airways, which both allow bags up to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm on board.

Since December 1, 2013, however, Ryanair passengers have also been permitted to bring along “one small bag up to 35 x 20 x 20 cms”. But this policy has caused problems.

No Guarantee your bag will make it inside

After flying to Rome with the low-cost carrier,Adrian Bridge, Travel Journalist with The Telegraph, reported that there was not enough room in the overhead lockers to accommodate all the extra stuff people are now bringing on board. “The solution? When Ryanair officials decide the lockers can take no more, passengers yet to board have to leave their cabin bags on the tarmac, from where they are collected and placed in the hold,” he said.

Ryanair staff often check the dimensions of bags in a rigid frame. If it doesn’t fit, and if any part of the bag or wheels protrudes, be aware that Ryanair is still inflexible over hand baggage size and weight, and the cost of getting it wrong remains steep: €50/£50 for putting the oversize bag in the hold (double this if you return with the same bag on the way home).

Beat The Baggage Box?

Ryanair hand luggage sizeNote that many bags that are labelled as ‘carry on’ are in fact too big for Ryanair. If your bag is too big, you will pay a fee, and sometimes even when your bag is fine, Ryanair may still charge you.

But these bags, both from Cabin Max, fit the bill really well. They are also exactly the right size for easyJet’s guaranteed hand baggage allowance, so they will fit most other airlines too. And at around 700g each (1.5lbs) , they are incredibly light so won’t eat into your miserly Ryanair hand luggage size. Plus: with straps that allow you to tighten everything into place, you won’t fall foul of a grumpy attendant saying your bag won’t fit the cage.

A Novel Way to Get the Most Out of Your Allowance

An unusual solution to fitting all of your luggage into your cabin baggage allowance is this Big Pocket Travel Vest, which has pockets large enough to fit a laptop. Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, says the airline will not charge for these jackets, and it is hard to see how he would be able to.

How Does Ryanair hand luggage size Compare to Other Airlines’?

The IATA (International Air Transport Association) standard hand baggage allowance (followed by and most other airlines (including Jet2 and British Airways) is 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22″ x 17.7″ x 9.8″)

But there is a lot of variance in allowances. Check this page on Hand Luggage Sizes to make sure you don’t get caught out.
